Things you need to know before getting a bearded dragon

What you need to know about bearded dragons before you get one.

  1. The food, you need to know what they eat. They will eat veggies, you can search what vegetables and fruits they can and can’t eat. Most of the time you have to cut these into smaller pieces and put them in a little food bowl.
  1. Alive food. You need to make sure you are not afraid of these insects. The insect that they can eat are crickets, grasshoppers, mealworms, super worms and they also eat cockroaches. These are their main food. Not just feed them one of these but switch around. Always make sure they have veggies in their bowl.
  2. NEVER FEED THEM INSECTS YOU FOUND IN YOUR GARDEN. This is because these insects could have viruses. When your beardie eats one of these there is a chance they could get sick or die. When you buy them at your local pet shop they will not have anything because they get checked a lot before they get into that box and get sold.
  3. Sleep. They need more sleep then we need. They need more than 10 hours of sleep. Mine sleeps over 12 hours.
  4. The Terrarium. You need to have a terrarium set up and ready to go before you get your beardie. When you get a full grown beardie it should be at least 1 meter (3,2 feet) long. When you want a spoiled little brat (like mine) get them a bigger cage. I have a 1,20 meter (3,9 feet). If you get 2 beardies 1,20 meters would be good. Of course for the really really REAAAALLLYYYY spoiled beardies get them even bigger, like 2 meters (6,5 feet) but this is not needed. If you have more than 2 then 2 meters is good. Having more than 2 beardies is hard tho
  5. Males and females. Never and I mean NEVER put 2 male bearded dragons together. Unless when they just got born and you don’t have more space. In the wild, they normally live alone or a male with 1 or more females. This is because they are very territorial. This means that if there is another bearded dragon in their space (territory) they will try to defend their territory. Most of the time they fight and the one who gives up loses and the winner gets the territory. Two beardies fighting
  6. The atmosphere. Where ever he is it needs to be chill and quiet. If there is a lot of screaming and fighting and not a nice atmosphere they can get stressed and always be angry

These were somethings you need to know before getting a lizard. There are more and this is a good cite. http://www.beardeddragonowners.com/.

living with and without a beardie

Living with and without a beardie. There are a lot of changes when a lizard is living with you. One example is waking up. I have an electric clock controlling his lights that turn on and off automatically at a specific time. It turns on around 7 I think and a lot of times it can wake you up. Now I am used to it and I sleep thru it. Also noise. It is not only the beardie that makes noise it is also his food. He eats crickets and they make an annoying sound. He also has a hard calcium stick and when he eats it makes a weird and funny sound. Space. These animals and their terrariums take a lot of space, also the food and the cleanup things take a lot of space. Next is time. My beardie takes about 1-3 hours of my day. Cutting fruit, giving him food, cleaning his cage and sometimes giving him a bath. Last is smell. When I took him in the house my room started smelling. It smells really bad and getting used to it takes a long time. After doing his business, it smells even worse. If I don’t clean it on time my whole room and sometimes the second floor (where my room is) smells really bad. All and all living with a lizard over a year now it has been a good year. These are living with and without a lizard.

Are you able to take care of a lizard?

This is a blog about what kind of people should or should not get a lizard. A lizard is not easy. I think most of us know if you are someone that is afraid of these animals its a dumb idea to get one. These animals are also no nocturnal (night) animals but diurnal (day) animals. They are awake and active at day and sleep at night. If you are a night person and like to sleep while the sun shines they you should get a gecko instead of a lizard because they are nocturnal (night) animals. If you are a business man and almost never have free time then you should never get a lizard because just like other pets these animals need attention and take time. You need to give them insects and cut veggies and give them attention. If you don’t have the time for this it is better to not get one. For the people who are not afraid of these animals, you have the time, you have the money and you have the courage to take on this challenge you should get one. For the people who want a pet and have the time but never thought about getting a lizard you should. It is a good pet and if you want bigger like an iguana or a monitor a bearded dragon is a good animal to get started. These animals are easier than a dog or a cat and cheaper. These lizards (just like dogs and cats) could give you a scar here and there but that’s okay. Like other pets (not all) you can snuggle with them. These animals are not as boring as you think. They all have their different personalities and sometimes have lots of energy and want to run around crazy. When I first saw my lizard running around like this I could not stop laughing. Living with one is fun and there are some challenges. If you want a pet that is exotic but also not that hard a beardie is a good thing. If you are a photographer, a beardie is good. These animals can be models and they sit still unlike other animals.  These are some reasons why you should or should not get a bearded dragon.

Owning a lizard

Owning a lizard is awesome. This is the review of owing a lizard. my lizard is called bolt (instagram) , he is a bearded dragon. this blog is for people who want a beardie or some kind of lizard. this blog is about how it to have him. I am first going to review the money. owning one is not cheap. my terrarium (1,20 cm by 50cm by 50cm(I think)). these terrariums cost about 200-500 euros. So only get a lizard if you really want one and have the time for him and have the money for it. 1 lizard also costs about 10-30 euros each month for food. A bearded dragon average cost about 50-100 euros itself. one pack of 9(or7) for 1,70 euros. I have to buy a couple of these every week. now the food. they eat a lot of things. With alive food, he eats grasshoppers, sometimes worms and crickets. He also eats veggies. He loves his salads. reviewing the lizard itself. Most people don’t know but lizards have feelings too and they all have their own personalities just like other pets. they also have times where they need their attention. They have times where they need to run around and use the energy they got and yes they can get really energetic. Cleaning, the cleaning of a lizard can get hard. The smell after they do their business is the worst smell. If you don’t clean it on time the whole room could smell. About every week I clean his windows. I also have to clean his veggie food bowl every day when I give him new veggies. I also have to clean his waster cup every day. Now his health. They can get sick. If they are sick you have to go to a vet. It’s hard finding a reptile vet. If they get sick these are some signs to see if your beardie is sick

  • They will look bad and have a different skin color than normal
  • Eating less and when eat not a lot
  • The poop. Their poop will look bad and it might have a different color. If you can still see the insect pieces in their poop your beardie is probably sick and his digesting will be bad and so be sick.

This was the review of owning a bearded dragon.

How to make life easier with a beardie

So I have a bearded dragon and his name is Bolt. He is about 1.5 years old. These are some great hacks that I found out while having him for longer than a year

Image may contain: 1 person
Image result for dog poop bags
  1. Using dog poop bags is a great thing to use for your lizard.
  2. Using these Kricket keepers are a good thing to use for krickets. When I first got him I did not have these and I had to shake it out and this never went smoothly.
  3. Buying other insects are also good. I buy krickets, grasshoppers, worms and when my mom is gone I buy cockroaches.
  4. Calcium. This is very good for beardies. They need this. You could put this on their veggies. There is also this thing that is calcium stick but I can’t find a image on the internet.
  5. Cage. in the cage you need some things. The example you need something for him to climb and something to sleep under or on or to just chill. I have a verticle standing rock and a piece of wood that he could climb on. On the image above he is sitting on a little rock bridge where he could sleep under or chill on
  6. Running. If he is running around in his cage take him out and let him run in a bigger space like your room or other rooms.
  7. After running he is tired and he wants sleeps. Another hack would be that you put something in front of your bed or so to block it from he going under. I have had many times where he was sleeping under my bed and IN FRONT of my wheels so I could not move so he was stuck.
  8. If he is stuck sleeping under your bed and in front of wheels you could take a stick and move him. Sometimes he would start moving and running after I move him.

These were 8 “beardie hacks” for bearded dragon owners. I use all of these hacks and they really help me so I hope that these would work for you too. If you are a bearded dragon owner and you used one of these hacks please comment if it worked.
